Like alot of people, I received a collection notice from Afni, Inc. Saying I owed $170.75 for an old Verizon Communications, Inc. Bill. I tried many times to contact Afni directly and was either put on forever hold only to be disconnected or told to go to their website so they could call me back.
I then called Verizon and was told they could nothing for me as all the information is now with Afni. I did get a better number of 866-352-0471 for Afni that got me straight through to a representative. This account is 13 years old!!! Even if they can validate the charge, they have no legal right to try and collect it. Every state has different statues of limitations so, you will need to find out what yours is.
Be warned that the representative will try and scare you into paying saying there is no such thing as a time limitation. Thank goodness I know my rights. What you need to do is send them a dispute letter certified mail. I found this site http://www.debt-n-credit-letters.com/index.html that has many different sample dispute letters including those for expired statue of limitations.
