Complaint / Review
Capital One
Ripoff dishonest LIES

I wanted to let you know that I've had a horrible experience with Capital One credit card. DO NOT USE THIS CAPITAL ONE CREDIT CARD!!! Here is why:

As many of you know, I went through a ROUGH divorce a few years ago. I needed to consolidate some bills. I called Capital One a few years back to have my ex's name removed from that card and to add my new husband's name to the card. Note: This card had a zero balance when I called. I spoke to a woman at Capital One and she said it was no problem to remove my ex's name and add my new husband's name. She said I could begin using the credit card immediately. I consolidated those bills. I also needed to use the card to live on (gas, groceries, kids' school needs) as the judge had ordered me to do some things that I just could not afford.

After consolidating these bills, I began receiving bills (and new credit cards) with my ex-husband's name on them AND my new husband's name on them. I called Capital One again and told them. They told me that I had to have a zero balance in order to take my ex-husband's name off of it! I already did that!!! Of course by now, I had a balance because I had consolidated my bills to this card. I was unable to pay it off.

I paid the monthly bills, but even though my divorce had been final for a couple years, I was still constantly going to court (long story), I could no longer afford to pay my monthly payment so I paid Capital One as much as I could. Finally, resulting in bankruptcy.

This credit card was in NO MEANS my ex-husband's responsibility. I've never tried to put it off on him. But none of this would be happening if Capital One would have handled this correctly to begin with. Since I filed bankruptcy, they are now "after" my ex-husband to pay the bill. As I said above, it's not his responsibility and I did what I was supposed to do and contacted Capital One before I used the card. Had they told me that I could not take his name off of it, I would have NEVER used that card. Had they not lied to me and told me that his name was off of there, I would have never used the card, I would have never consolidated the bills.

One thing to always rememberwhen you do ANYTHING like this (with any company), always be sure to get the person's name with whom you are speaking to and be sure to write the date and time down that you spoke to them so you have some sort of proof that you spoke to someone. Even with Capital One, I'm not exactly sure this would help as they are scum, but it would be a little bit of help in your defense. I sure do wish I had!

As I mentioned above, Capital One is after my ex-husband to pay almost the full amount. His attorney has called Capital One and even though this is now a "charged off debt" (because of the bankruptcy) they won't hardly budge from the original amount. Capital One still wants payment, which would, at this point, just be "extra money" or "icing on the cake" for them.

My main point is that Capital One is SCUM. I called and did the right thing by requesting to have my ex-husband's name taken off of the card BEFORE I used it. They lied to me and told me that I could do so, when I really could not since he was a signer on the original application. But, again, they never told me this. Then, when I consolidated the bills and called back to talk to them about it, they basically told me there was nothing they could do, even after THEIR error!!! I have also, since then, heard many horror stories about Capital One and found out that they are one of the WORST companies to deal with. Sosave yourself some trouble, DO NOT USE CAPITAL ONE!!!

P.S. I only listed City of Industry, Ca as the address, but they have MANY addresses (St. Louis, Mo; Dallas, Tx; Salt Lake City, Ut; Richmond, Va, just to name a few)
