I wish I would have read your site before calling this people.
Today, I received a letter Merchants sent me to my previous address in California. The letter stated that I owe their Pinnacle Credit Services client, $7,062.48 and that the original debt was from Chevy Chase in Maryland.
As soon as I opened the letter, I called that number, because I thought, "Identity theft"... The person who answered told me that it was a 12 year old debt on an a credit card opened under my SS#. I got really confused, because to my knowledge I didnt owe anybody, and on top of that I was not in US in 1994.
The person told me that it was an account opened in Maryland, and when I mentioned if that could have been and identity theft, the person said that it couldnt because a payment was being made until 1995. I was not even in this country at that time. I was totally confused, scared of identity theft, I hang up and called again to request more information. They told me that the account was opened in 1991 and the debt was 4,000 up until 1994 and today it was 7,062.
I am afraid that somebody stole my ss# and used while I was out of this country. The other thing is that I dont want this people to take advantage of me. I am building my credit to buy a house and I want to make sure I dont make mistakes.
Please advise.By the way, did you notice that they usually send letters to people in other states than IL. Should that be something I should look into?
Should I send a validation letter or a letter stating to stop bothering me. I heard that they can report to your credit and it takes time an effor to correct that erroneous report. How can I avoid that.
What can I do now, that I already call them three times and gave them lots of info about me and even my telephone number
Please help me.
