Ripoff fraudulent debt collection

I received a letter from Merchants Credit Guide saying that I owed $517 on a Mobil account. The name on the letter was wrong and I have never had a Mobil account.

I called Merchants to tell them of the mistake & was told that my SS# was listed on the account. They refused to give me any other information regarding the debt, saying that if I denied owing the debt, then I had no right to any information about it.

I was told to send a signed written notice of the dispute to their headquarters and ask for a copy of the original signed credit application.
