I received a phone call Monday before work from a law firm from Atlanta. The call came up as unknown, but with the number listed. When I answered, they asked if I was so-and-so, which I did confirm my name. The man then told me he was Shawn (sp?) McCullough, calling about a Heilig Meyers account. I do not have a Heilig Meyers account; they went bankrupt in the summer of 2000. He called out the last four digits of my social; yes, it was correct. I told him it wasn't though, and said he needed to do some checking.
Well, after searching the net, I found a John C. McCullough and Payne listed with the phone number I was called from. They are corporate lawyers in Atlanta; I wrote down the information. I also called the number back, and asked them to return my call as I needed some documentation for a identity theft report.
It took them two days to get back to me, and when the gentleman called THIS time, the number showed up belonging to a C. Alexander. Strange. He told me the address I had was invalid as they had 'moved to a new location'. Strange again. I asked for the specific store I supposedly bought from; he did not have it. He did not have the sales contract either, nor a list of what was bought. There was also no proof of ID. All he had was that the account was opened September 26, and charged off on September 30. Hmm. The stores are gone, went out of business in March accoding to what I found out.
Then he gave me the kicker: Palisades Collections LLC is who has the account. He informed me that he would call them to get additional information for my police report, and asked that I send him a copy of the report, a copy of what I send to the credit bureau, and a copy of what they send me back. He also informed me that he could not hold off forever. A threat, I'm assuming.
I have sent for all three credit agencies to send my report to me, and I have placed a fraud alert on my credit report. I have filed a police report, as well as found all the information I can on Palisades for the investigator I'll be talking to Monday.
If anyone has any other suggestions for me, please let me know, as I think I need some help with this.
