I got a call from someone on my cell phone concerning a debt I am responsible for. I told her that I did not have all the money to pay in one shot but I was willing to negotiate monthly payments, she said "No we want $2000 right now." I know my rights and I know that collection agencies are supposed to work with you on a payment schedule so I questioned whether this was a legitimate phone call.
I said "I want proof of this debt.." so she said "well Citibank DID contact you several months ago about this." I said "People sell information on other people everyday, now I want proof.." since she was no help, I hung up on her and decided not to pick up ever again. They dont want to set up a payment plan (which is against the law. Then I dont want to pay.)
Im still in college so I know that when Im older and want to buy something expensive (like a house where I need to take out a loan...) this stuff wont be on my credit report anymore, thats why Im not extremely worried about this debt. Now, I am getting harrassing phone calls from UCB telling me to "shut the *&*& up." I get 5-6 calls a day. I picked up my phone and said "all these phone calls will be recorded"... And there was silence.
They no longer spoke on the phone as if they knew that they can honestly get in trouble for their unethical business practices. Now, they decided to leave me a message (very politely) to have my attorney's contact them (they are trying to scare me by thinking that there is a pending lawsuit when there ISNT.) I read other reports on UCB and apparently, they try to scare alot of people with the word "lawsuit." Im 19 years old... I dont have an attorney nor am I scared.
I plan on sending them a cease of communication letter soon as well as calling Citibank to complain about the great collection agency they contracted.
Im on here wondering... Has anyone gotten any results in telling them to back off? Has UCB successfully brought someone to court and garnished their wages etc? Let me know! Thanks
