I was recently involved in an internet scam. I sent my money through moneygram later to find out I was not going to receive what I payed for. I was not the first person involved in this scam.
I found out this person I sent my money to is not even a real person. They obviously have a fake ID to obtain the money because that same person is supposed to reside not only in Alabama where I sent my money to, but in New York where another person ripped off by the scam was supposed to send their money.
I called moneygram and spoke to a representative telling them what had happened to me and that the person is clearly using a fake ID. Now true, I sent my money to someone I didn't know which was not the smartest thing I've ever done, BUT, This person was supposed to provide proper ID to receive the money I sent and I trusted that Moneygram would make sure that they had it.
The representative told me that Moneygram did their job by transferring the money for me so they could not refund their money. I told him that they did not do their job by checking to make sure the receiver provided proper identification to receive the money and when he did not understand this I asked to speak to someone else.
I was then put on the phone with a very rude woman who said that as long as the person had a picture ID they could receive the money. She said the IDs are not scanned to make sure they are real or anything. They just have to have a picture on them. So I asked her that if I had a fake ID but it had my picture on it that I could pick up a moneygram and she said YES.
I then told her I was glad the conversation was being recorded not by me but by Moneygram because I was sure that's not something they should be proud of.
