Misrepresented claim for another collection company for a bad check to my cable company when I do not even write checks

I am getting letters and phone calls late at night, wanting to "settle" a claim for a check Written in the amount of $37.05. The settlement amount is a whopping $185.05!

They claim to represent a collection company that represents my cable company. I told them I have never written a bad check to the cable company, and they say the company doesn't turn off service for bad checks! Sure, I know that's right! (NOT)

The cable company has no reference to this, the bank has no reference to this, and I don't even write checks! My bank pays my bills automatically.

But now I must hire an attorney to clear my credit file, over a check that never existed, let alone bounced!
