Card shut off over bounced checks after debit card theft

My wallet was stolen, and I did not find out until the following morning. I called all my credit card companies and the police right away. I canceled all cards and ordered new ones. As I slept peacefully the night before, some lowlife used my Suntrust bank card at 11 different gas stations in two different counties here in South Florida.

Since this happened over the weekend, I had to wait until Monday morning to fax in a claim to get my funds back. The bank refunded all overdraft fees and returned my money the next day. After a few weeks they sent me a letter letting me know that all was okay and that the refund was permanent.

After another month or so I made an error and bounced one check. I got a direct deposit the next day, so the fee was taken care of and the account was back to positive. I went to the gas station and could not use my bank card. I called customer service, and they said they could not talk to me and I had to go in to a branch.

When I went into the branch, they informed me that they had turned off my card since I had bounced a check. I asked why, since I had been with them for over a year and had only made this one mistake. The lady at the branch informed me that it was because I had over ten bounced checks in the past year. I reminded her that I had personally bounced only one and the rest were caused by thieves, and that the bank had refunded all of those fees. She said that it did not matter that someone had committed credit card fraud with my bank card. Her words were, "the account should never be negative regardless if someone steals your card or not."

I then asked her why I had to come into the branch to get my card turned back on instead of speaking to a customer service representative over the phone, and she stated it was because they have a fraud alert on my account. So I can't even talk to my own bank; I have to go in person. Luckily, I have two bank accounts, and now I barely use this account. I am thinking about just closing it for good. Suntrust has to be the worst bank ever.
