So, in the midst of a heated divorce, I opened a checking account at the same branch in the same office as the one that my soon to be ex-husband and I had had together. He was required to pay me child support and did so from this account.in November I received a check, deposited it and waited for it to clear before I spent anything off of it. It cleared after 3 days and I paid my bills. Then I left to visit family for Thanksgiving.
On the Saturday after Thanksgiving (6 days after the check had cleared) I tried to fill my car up with gas and my debit card was declined. I called the bank thinking it was an error and they told me that my account was over drawn. Turns out his check had bounced and when it did, so did all of mine. I went to the branch on Monday morning to dispute the claim. I was told there was nothing they could do and that they wouldn't waive the fees.in the end their screw up ended up costing me over $1500 for a $500 check.
On top of that, because I bounced so many checks from this (15 in 2 days, they were all small checks), I have now been blacklisted from opening a bank account anywhere and even if I did, I couldn't write checks. Not because I couldn't keep up with my bills or balance a check book, but because Compass Bank honored a bad check from an account AT ITS OWN BRANCH OFFICE to another account AT THE SAME OFFICE! And that was after they waited 3 days to clear it! I am floored and I can't get another account.
Thank you Compass Bank. You'll be hearing from my lawyers.
