Comfort Protection Plan Did Not Cover Furnace Repair

The Comfort Protection Plan is a scam. In February 2006, a Reliance salesperson sold it to me.

Her pitch was full of lies. In short, she told me that the furnace and the air conditioner would be fully covered for every repair for 15.99 a month, and that a repairman would come out and fix whatever went wrong. It sounded too good to be true, so I asked her a number of questions.

Nearly four years of payments later, in November, the furnace refused to start. I phoned Reliance, but it was running again by the time the repairman got here. Even so, he was eager to take our furnace apart. He told us the heat exchanger was cracked, that the repair would cost $900.00, and that he might as well sell me a new furnace. I asked when he could do the repair, because the plan covered everything, right?

Wrong! Now I was being taught what the plan did not cover, which turned out to be basically everything that normally breaks down. All at once I felt caught in a scam. I had paid 15.99 every month for nothing, and on top of that the plan gave Reliance a way into my home to rip me off further.

He told me that, according to policy, he had to shut my furnace down. Whose self-serving policy is that? It would have left a family of five with no heat. Remember, the furnace was working before he got here. I do not think he was honest about the cracked heat exchanger, since the furnace is still running.

First Reliance scammed me out of 15.99 a month for four years, and then it tried to scam me in my own home with scare tactics.

Naturally, I called Reliance to complain and to ask for my 15.99 a month back for those four years. The person on the phone read from a script. Instead of addressing the lying salesperson, they blamed us for not reading the fine print of a pamphlet that was never sent to me.

Beware of Reliance. They are scammers.
