A fire broke out in my building, and the building owner ordered me to take down the satellite dish because it was a fire hazard. I therefore had to disconnect my DirecTV service, and when I cancelled, I was hit with a $220 cancellation fee.
They explained that a year earlier I had swapped out a defective DVR receiver, which supposedly left me with another year on my contract. Nobody told me that replacing the receiver would extend my contract. I sent a written complaint to their complaint department, and when no answer came, I phoned DirecTV. I was told their dispute department had decided the fee was valid and I had to pay the $220.
I think it is unfair to penalize a customer over a defective DVR receiver, and especially when the owner of the building was the one who required the dish to come down.
