Please be advised - It is not always easy to gain internet access to check in and also get seats reserved for return trips in some of the countries. Therefore, it is a lot easier and less stressful knowing you are booked with a seat when you leave the U.S. I repeatedly tried to reserve seats and was not successful until night before we left.
