Blue Spruce Motel
Or The Bates Motel? Rt. 9N Adirondack Mountains

This last summer I took my son and my nephew (ages 11 and 13) up to Whiteface Mountain (Lake Placid Region) in New York's Adirondack Mountains for a weekend of camping. After getting to the campsite in the late afternoon and setting up our tent, it started to pour. Well, it never let up, it just kept raining and raining and after a few hours our tent was sitting in 4" of water, and there was just no way we were going to spend the night in there. So at about 9:00pm I loaded up the two kids and everything else that we could pack into my truck and headed down the road looking for a motel.

Well we ended up in Keesville, New York, and I pulled into the first motel that I seen on Rt. 9N (The Blue Spruce Motel.) Me and the two kids walked into the office and the first thing I did was ring the little bell because there wasn't anyone at the desk/counter. A lady who seemed very pleasant came out from the back room and asked if she could help me. I asked if they had any rooms and she said yes. She then asked how many there was in my party, to which I replied me and the two kids.

My next question to her was "do you have phones in the rooms?" (only because I wanted to call my ex-wife and my sister to let them know that we all made it up there ok.) That's when I heard somebody in the backroom bellar out "NO! WE GOT NO F'..inG PHONES!" Two seconds later this guy in his late 40's or early 50's walks out of the backroom as wild-eyed as Charlie Manson (or should I say as wild-eyed as Norman Bates) got up to me as close as he could (we had the counter between us) and bellared again "WE GOT NO F'...inG PHONES, AND DON'T BE RINGING THE F'..inG BELL!) Then he just stood there still wild-eyed as can be, trying to stare me down. Right then and there I thought this guy is going to try to swat me because he just had the crazed look if I ever seen one. Well he didn't, and I very calmly picked my credit card up off the desk, (before the lady had a chance to swipe it through thier machine,) put it back into my wallet and said "Thank you very much, have yourself a good evening." To which he replied "YOU TOO."

I turned around and I immediately noticed that my son (Seth) and my nephew (Dalton) looked absolutely terrified. I told them "Come on, let's go." We got out the door and the first question out of thier mouths were "We're not staying here are we?" To which I replied "Hell no we're not staying here, get in the damn truck!" I loaded them back into the truck and went up the road about 1/4 mile and got a room there.

While I was checking into the motel up the road, I told the lady there about my experience down the road, and she said that she's heard some stories about this guy, and that he's most likely drunk. When we got settled in our new room, both kids were worried that this guy would come up the road looking for us. It took awhile, but I was able to convince the two of them that we really didn't have anything to worry about.

The next day before heading out of town, we stopped to have breakfast. While I was in this restaurant I was talking with this couple who lived in town and they knew exactly the motel I was talking about, and they knew the guy who owned it. They said that the guy who owns it is an ok guy, they were guessing that the bafoon I had the pleasure of meeting was his son Roger.

About the only other thing I can add to this is that the lady that started to wait on me was both pleasant and polite, I don't have a problem with her Looking back, I'm glad it didn't come to blows because I could just see myself getting the short end of the stick in court simply because it would have been on their property and at their place of business. The only advise I can give the guy who owns this place is that you would probably do well to find your idiot kid something to do that don't include any type of interaction with the public.
