World Mark By Wyndham
Sleazy Marketing Tactics

I was hired as a temp to work in this company. My main duties were turning people away from their presentations who did not qualify to attend. People mainly came to the presentations because there was an offer of a free trip involved IF they met certain income and credit qualifications.

Some of the turn-aways were people who had simply not read the invitation before signing, but a large number of them were people who had been misled by the unaccountable telemerketers and others, at sports events and fairs, contracted out to do marketing on behalf of the company. When the attendees would raise concerns about meeting the qualifications, the telemerketers, in order to fill their quotas, would tell them not to worry, and just to show up for the presentation. There were also a nuymber of people who were misled by the World Mark sales staff as well, either by omitting key information about the requirements, or not giving them the information in the first place.

A lot of these people were understandably angry for being misled, and some of them had driven 2 hours or more to get there. My job was to "firmly" get them to leave without actually addressing any of their concerns. I was laid off after a week for not being firm enough (code for not being a big enough DICK to the people they'd screwed over), and for taking too long talking to and listening to the people they wanted kicked out.

Another creepy thing about it was that around 80-90% of the people being kicked out were black, and the sales staff (all but of them were white) got all whispery when a black person actually qualified to get in. One sales person, a middle aged white guy, was visibly dissappointed when he was assigned a black couple, and he showed them into the presentation theater and rudely left them there without talking to them.

The sales team mood was a circus freakshow schmooze-fest, and I felt like I needed to wash every day after coming home from work. I wouldn't have taken the position if I didn't need the work so badly.

I'd avoid this company if you are marketed to from them at a public event (sports games, fairs, etc) or by phone.
