Back In Febuary Of this year I went to Gold's Gym In Merriam, KS, to respond to a free trial membership at the club that I had won. When I got to the club I talked to one of the trainers, I forgot exactly who it was. I sat down with the man and told him exactly what I wanted, I understood that the "free membership that I had won was not going to be free forever, so I told him that if the rates were reasonable enough I would sign for a one year contract.
He told me that a one year contract would be 42.00 per month and a 130.00 one time sighn up fee. He also said that I would have a personal trainer assigned to me when I came to work out, and that I would have access to the martal arts and raquetball programs at the club. So I thought that the price and the programs were reasonable enough to join so I filled out all of the paperwork. I also told him to bill me for the payments in the mail, and not through electronic funds transfer from my checking account.
So In the weeks following I showed up at the club for my regular workout sessions, and this went on until about April and each time I went I pretty much did my own thing, except I was getting flustered that I wasnt getting the personal trainer I was promised and I wasnt able to participate in the martial arts classes as I had hoped to, every time I asked that same man who assisted me in filliing out my paperwork"Where is the personal trainer that I am supposed to have" He would reply "we havent assigned anyone to you yet, but we are working on it", so after a while I just became down right angry with the club an as a last ditch effot I Spoke with the club manager and addressed the same issues with him he told me "well we dont have the proper staffing to provide you with a personal trainer, if you dont like it go to another club location" well since that club is closer to where I live that is the most conveinent place for me to workout.
So After that I decided that I had enough of their crap and that I wasnt going to return to the club anymore. Another month goes by and I start getting phone calls from ASF International, Gold's gym"s appointed collection service, and they were calling like every half hour throughout the day on my home and cell phone, asking me when I was going to pay my club dues, after ignoring their calls for about a week, I finally answered the phone and spoke with one of the collection agents.
I told him that I was not going to keep my part of the contract by paying the dues because the club didnt keep their part by providing me with the agreed services the collection agent replied " You will pay the payments, and you have to pay them, we are not concerned as to why you are dissatisfied with the club's services we are just collecting the payments" I replied to him "What business do you think you have telling me that I will pay the payments.
I dont give a S—t if you are a collector you will not tell me that I will make a payment even if I am dissatisfied with a service, You can take that contract and shove it up your a-s. And I would like you to stop calling me as much as you have been" then I just hung up on him. The phone calls from the company did not stop, so I changed my numbers, it got rather annoying that they were calling every half hour througout the day.
So I called the Gold's Gym Corporate Office and explained to them that I wanted to cancel the contract, they told me that it was a legally bound contract and the only way I could back out if I had a medical condition or if I called ASF International and tried to cancel it.
So I bought that answer, and called ASF Back. BIG MISTAKE, I called there and spoke with another agent, and she said that it was a legally bound contract and I couldnt back out, I told her I wasnt going to pay the dues and they could either sue me or write it off, either way I wasnt going to pay for something that I wasnt using.
So not even a day or two later the continuous phone calls started back up on my new cell phone number, I guess the collections agent at ASF got the number off their caller ID system. So those calls continued for another three weeks and I chose to ignore them, so I called my cell phone provider and had the number changed again, and since that time I havent got anymore calls from them. But This is a "heads up" for anyone thinking about joining a health club.
