I signed up for a one year membership at Bally's, located in Brooklyn where Coney Island and Kings Highway intersect. When I signed the contract, I was blind to the problems that existed within the walls of this gym.
This gym is uncomfortably humid and warm. I begin sweating the minute I walk through the doors.
Several treadmills and other cardio equipment are defective even after repair (these machines are constantly under repair and out-of-order). I have nearly injured myself on the treadmills twice due to a faulty belt despite making management aware of the issue beforehand.
For two consecutive weeks, this gym lacked any towels. How were people wiping down equipment? Not to mention there is never disinfectant spray, something that is essential to keeping a gym sanitary.
This gym is overstaffed with trainers who don't know their ass from a two dollar bill. I've witnessed these trainers act negligently, whether it's laughing at members who misuse equipment and not correcting them or not taking my complaints seriously.
Members at this gym have no consideration. If you weight train with free weights, you will have to learn to maneuver around scattered weights that are not re-racked.
I even sat down and had a discussion with the incompetent club manager of this gym. When I told her about the blatant issues with the equipment, she dismissed my observations by informing me that she meets with an engineer every morning. I'm sure the two-year graduate from technical school takes his job seriously and his word should take precedent over mine.
After all was said and done, she, as well as the cancellation department I subsequently called, suggested I use another location. I have read much about the fact that Bally's locations have severe disparities in quality. This location most likely ranks among their worst all across the board, in management, equipment, and upkeep.
Due to these problems, I cannot continue to work out at Bally's... And I can't cancel my membership because apparently a hazardous gym is not justification for withdrawing from a membership. I'm reporting not to grieve about my experience, but to thwart you from joining a gym that only provides aggravation.
Now I am paying Bally's 40 a month so that I can take a jog to coney island in the cold of winter. Thanks Bally's! You epitomize the business ethics that have driven us toward this awful recession. Accountability and customer satisfaction seem on the verge of extinction, and hopefully Bally's as well.
