LA Fitness in Pico Rivera opened a few months ago.in November, I thought I would give them a try. I came into the club with a 3-day trial membership and that same day I was pressured to join. I gave the gentleman a $100 (cash) sign-up fee and was told that I could cancel within three days. But if I did not cancel, my account would be charged the $40 membership fee in January.
I enjoyed working out that day, but as soon as I got home, I realized that I could not afford the membership. I was currently between jobs and awaiting employment. I went back to LA Fitness the next day to cancel. I was referred to the manager who gave me the third degree. She would not accept that I did not want to continue membership. She asked me several personal questions and when I told her I was currently unemployed even tried to offer me a job so that I would keep the membership.
The conversation really turned south when, frustrated by my continual insistence to cancel, the manager began to insult me. She said that I should take some responsibility, move out of my parents house and get a job. Never mind the fact that my personal employment and living situation was none of her business.
Finally, she agreed to cancel the membership and took my information while I took her card. She promised me that my $100 would be refunded in six weeks and my account would not be charged the membership fee.
Six weeks later, no refund and, lo and behold, my account was charged the $40. It took calling the corporate office and then returning to LA Fitness in person, making a scene and going through the merry-go-round with the manager (who claimed she had never seen me, never spoke to me, and never promised a refund) to finally receive my refund and cancellation.
My experience with this gym was the most horrible experience I have ever had. It was very unprofessional and very distressing. My advice: never go to LA Fitness. Also, if you're a woman, go to curves!
