LA Fitness membership problems: contact, cancel, dispute charges and escalate (pages opened October 7, 2026)

This section is about getting a charge stopped or a membership ended. It is based on the company's own Contact Us page, the company's published statement, the FTC's case documents and the FTC's consumer alert (all opened on October 7, 2026).

Where the company says to go. The Contact Us page at lafitness.com asks whether you are a member and offers these topics: Account and billing information, Personal training, Club and staff feedback, Freeze, Cancel and Other. Choosing Cancel offers two options: 'Continue to cancel page' and 'Ask a question about canceling my membership'. The page says replies come from [email protected] and offers a ZIP-code lookup for the customer service phone number for your area, so there is no single national member phone number on that page.

What the company says about cancelling. In a statement dated August 20, 2025 (published on its BBB profile), Fitness International said it had "proactively launched an online cancellation option for all members, regardless of how they originally signed up", that it has "chosen to keep our online cancellation program in place", and that members "also have always had the option to cancel in person at any club, or by mail". The statement adds that the company works to "offer at a minimum every cancellation method specifically required by each state".

What the FTC alleges about the earlier process. According to the FTC's complaint, for years the company required either in-person cancellation with one specific employee or cancellation by mail, with the form available only after logging in to the website, and it told members to use certified or registered mail. These are allegations; the court has not decided them (see the litigation section).

Practical steps for a billing or cancellation problem

  • Keep your membership agreement, the date and method of each cancellation request, any confirmation, and your billing statements.
  • Use the cancel option on the Contact Us page or the method written in your own membership agreement, and keep proof of the date (screenshot, email, mailing receipt). Cancellation terms can differ by state and by agreement, and this page has not reviewed any individual member's contract.
  • If the company keeps charging after a cancellation you can document, the FTC's consumer alert says to dispute the charges with your credit or debit card company, and adds that just changing your credit or debit card number is often not enough.
  • You can report the problem to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, to your state attorney general or consumer protection office, and to the Better Business Bureau.
  • State law adds cancellation rights that do not depend on the company's own channels. The California Department of Consumer Affairs guide to health club contracts says: "The contract must contain a provision that gives you a five-day right to cancel the contract" (longer periods apply to higher-value contracts, and cancellation rights exist for disability, death or a move of more than 25 miles). The New York Attorney General's health club page says: "Your health club must allow you to cancel through methods including, but not limited to: the health club's website; by email, telephone, or mail; or in person." Other states differ; check your own state's rules (pages opened October 7, 2026).
  • Personal training is a separate agreement. The FTC alleges personal training agreements run six to twelve months and carry an early-cancellation fee of 50 percent of the remaining balance; read your own signed agreement for the actual terms.
  • Add-on services (for example towel service or childcare) can be billed separately. The FTC alleges the company did not disclose that these are separate paid programs with their own cancellation method; check your statement for each charge line.

FTC lawsuit over membership cancellation (filed August 20, 2025)

Federal Trade Commission. On August 20, 2025 the FTC announced that it had sued Fitness International, LLC and Fitness & Sports Clubs, LLC, which it says operate LA Fitness and other gym chains, "over allegations they make it exceedingly difficult for consumers to cancel their gym memberships and related services". The FTC says it seeks "a court order prohibiting the allegedly unfair conduct and money back for consumers harmed by the difficulty in cancelling memberships". The Commission vote authorizing the staff to file the complaint was 3-0. The FTC's own note says: "The case will be decided by the court."

The FTC's case page lists the case status as Pending (last updated January 26, 2026) and posts an Amended Complaint. The Amended Complaint (filed in court on December 23, 2025 as Document 37) pleads unfair cancellation practices for onsite enrollees (Section 5 of the FTC Act) and violations of the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act (ROSCA) for website enrollees, concerning inadequate disclosures and the lack of a simple cancellation mechanism. Among its allegations: "Defendants have received tens of thousands of reports from consumers complaining that their cancellation practices are difficult", and the defendants operate "more than 600 locations and over 3.7 million members in the United States". These are the FTC's allegations, not findings.

The company's position. Fitness International's August 20, 2025 statement (published on its BBB profile) says: "The allegations are without merit", that ROSCA "does not require any specific method of cancellation" and "has never before been applied to the health club industry", that "most of our memberships, and all of our personal training memberships, are purchased in person at our club locations", and that "We remain confident that we will prevail in court."

Other regulators. The BBB profile's government-action notice lists only the FTC matter. This page has not searched every state attorney general or state regulator's enforcement database, so it does not say that no other action exists.

Who operates LA Fitness

The FTC's Amended Complaint identifies Fitness International, LLC as a California limited liability company with its principal place of business at 3161 Michelson Drive, Suite 600, Irvine, California, doing business as LA Fitness, and Fitness & Sports Clubs, LLC as a Delaware limited liability company at the same address that is "a wholly owned subsidiary of FI". The LA Fitness Terms and Conditions of Use say Fitness International, LLC "owns and operates" the website and services; they were last updated on January 1, 2024.

The LA Fitness website says the brand was "Founded in Southern California in 1984" (a company statement). In its August 2025 statement the company says it has "over 40 years in business and operations expanded across 25 states". The FTC alleges that the two companies operate gyms in the United States and Canada under the names LA Fitness, Esporta Fitness, City Sports Club and Club Studio, and that a base membership is billed monthly with an annual fee, with optional personal training ("Pro Results") and more than 50 add-on services. Whether the Canadian operations are run by the same legal entity was not checked on this page.

The website's Terms and Conditions of Use contain an arbitration clause and a California governing-law clause for the website and services; the membership agreement itself is a separate document that was not reviewed for this page. Ownership of Fitness International, LLC was not established from the sources opened, and none is stated here.

BBB lists the Irvine profile under the name LA Fitness with alternate names that include Fitness International LLC, Club Studio, Esporta Fitness, City Sports, Pro Results, Pilates by LAF, LA Fitness International and Body of Change (BBB page opened October 7, 2026).

Recent club changes reported by others. The Texas Secretary of State's health spa page (index opened October 7, 2026) lists 'LA Fitness & Pro Results, Pasadena' under 'Exempt Health Spa Closings'; the linked notice itself could not be opened on that date, so its text is not quoted here. The Springfield Business Journal reported on August 26, 2026 that the LA Fitness club in the White Oaks Mall, Springfield, Illinois closed on July 31 and that local gym FitClub acquired the club's membership base and equipment, with memberships transferring on August 1 and, per FitClub's CEO, about 9 percent of members opting out. LA Fitness did not respond to the newspaper's request for comment. If your own club closes, check your agreement and state law for refund rights and ask the company in writing about your balance.

FTC v. Fitness International: docket history

Federal Trade Commission v. Fitness International, LLC and Fitness & Sports Clubs, LLC, U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, No. 8:25-cv-01841 (Judge John W. Holcomb). Docket entries as displayed by CourtListener on October 7, 2026:

  • August 20, 2025: FTC complaint filed. A waiver of service for Fitness & Sports Clubs LLC was returned on September 11, 2025 (ECF 27).
  • October 1, 2025: the court stayed the case during a lapse of FTC appropriations (ECF 29); November 17, 2025: the stay was lifted and deadlines extended by 43 days (ECF 31).
  • December 3, 2025: the defendants moved to dismiss the original complaint under Rule 12(b)(6) (ECF 33), with an appendix of state health club laws.
  • December 23, 2025: the FTC filed a First Amended Complaint (ECF 36 and 37; errata at ECF 38). The January 6, 2026 order (ECF 40) vacated the schedule for the motion against the original complaint.
  • January 16, 2026: the defendants moved to dismiss the First Amended Complaint under Rule 12(b)(6) (ECF 41); the FTC opposed on February 6 (ECF 42); the defendants replied on February 13 (ECF 44).
  • April 24, 2026: a minute order says the motion to dismiss "is taken UNDER SUBMISSION", a trial schedule is set, and the defendants "are GRANTED leave to file two motions for summary judgment" (ECF 50). The same day the court referred the case to Magistrate Judge Karen E. Scott for a settlement conference, with the ADR proceeding "to be held no later than 5/7/2027" (ECF 48). A stipulated protective order was entered on April 29, 2026 (ECF 55).
  • The listing continues through September 24, 2026 (ECF 78) with further filings whose descriptions were not available. ECF 53 and 54 (April 28, 2026) are listed only as 'Order' without text. This page therefore does not say whether the motion to dismiss has been decided.
  • Press report: the Law360 case page for this matter lists an April 24, 2026 article saying LA Fitness asked the judge to reconsider his tentative order refusing to dismiss the FTC's suit and argued that the company only recommended, and never required, certified or registered mail for cancellation notices. That is a news report of a tentative ruling, not a docket entry; the docket text of ECF 50 (above) records only that the motion was taken under submission.

Allegations in the complaint have not been decided. The company denies them (see the FTC section).

Other lawsuits naming Fitness International, LLC exist on federal dockets. They were not reviewed for this page, and no settlement or class action is described here because none was verified against a primary document.
