I had the same sort of experience with LA fitness in Huntingdon Valley, PA. After the corporate hard sell pitch, I signed up for a family package with an up front membership fee and a monthly payment. I was shocked when I got my next Visa statement and found that they had charged me not only my monthly fee, but had charged me for it 4times!!! Instead of the family fee, they charged me for 4 individual memberships (myself and 3 children). My visa bill was almost $600.
I went right in and spoke to a manager that acknowledged the mistake and told me it would be returned back to my "account". Next month, not only was the first month fees NOT returned, but they charged me x 4 again! Now my visa was over $1200.
Again, I talked to the manager, who said everything was handled at the local LA fitness, and there was no corporate person to talk to and clear it up. He had me talk to a "billing" employee who assured me the money would be put back in my "account". I ASSUMED it would be refunded back to my Visa account. After it happened again, yet a third time, I was furious.
I again spoke to the "billing" manager who said she would correct the overbilling, but that the refund was returned to my account. When I showed her my statement that clearly showed a huge balance, none of which was refunded, she replied that the monies were placed into my LA FITNESS ACCOUNT for me to use at a future date.
I was extremely upset and told her that they took all that money from me, and that I wanted it returned to me, refunded in my Visa account. She told me that it was not LA company policy to refund any money but they could put the monies into an LA Fitness account only.
Now, furious, I told her they had stolen my money without my authorization and I wanted it all returned to me - I DID NOT WANT to use MY $1600 at LA Fitness. The company did not honor this and it took months for me, literally a nightmare, appealing it and finally getting it back through my Visa company (thank god for visa). Poor, poor business practices - of course I cancelled my membership and of course they tried to charge me a cancellation fee. Absolutely no ownership of their error.
