I started working for the owner in July. She seemed nice and laid back, honest and upfront. At the time there were two managers. A salon manager and a spa manager. My schedule was open (10am) until 4 pm. I was on commission. I found out a few weeks later, I was supposed to be paid an hourly wage and commission according to state board laws. She didnt want want to hear that. She had 4 of us (stylists and nail techs) she would have had to pay an hourly wage to. Everyone else was a booth renter. I decided to stay because the shop is big and all of us stylists and nail techs had a good relationship which made for an easy week. Plus I didnt want to quit without another job. I bought All my own products so the commission was to be 60/40. She decided on her own to make it 50/50 and she did not buy one product for me. We were paid in cash on Mondays in an envelope with a reciept. We were supposed to recieve paychecks with taxes taken out.in December state board visited. There was one stylist left in the shop. So she called the manager and they were all on the phone. She told the inspector we were employees so the inspector needed a required sheet to prove that. She had the stylist looking everywhere for a sheet that she Knew wasnt in existence. So the inspector was waiting and the owner finally said "oh no, they are All independent contractors" this made the situation worst.in order to be an independent contractor you have to also carry a mangers license. 4 of us had no managers, the rest did but no independent contractors. We were all fined $500 because of her lie. She was fined $4000. We were sent a letter, with a copy of the conversation she had with the inspector, so she couldnt deny it. If we responded within 30 days we could settle the fine for $250. If the owner settled then she could pay $2000. She made sure her fine was settled. She sent us a mass text saying we passed State Board, she is so proud of us and we need to keep up the continued work. She didnt think we would get a letter with stating the mess she caused. We ended up with a certified letter telling us everything. She was supposed to address the situation in our team meetings and never did until we brout it up. Long story short she waited and waited until we recieved notice that if our fine wasnt paid our license would be suspended. She gave us a check and we had to drive to Columbus (2 hours) and pay the fine. She paid it because she knew she lied. While we were in Columbus we asked about the pay policy. We returned to let her know what we were told about recieving an hourly pay plus commission along with the fact 5 workers quit because they were tired of the mess going on. We also did not have the 2 managers we were supposed to have, but we still opening up as usual. Once again putting our license in jeopardy.
Instead od getting paid on Mondays she switched it to Thurs and didnt tell us. We have came in on Thurs and there was no money and she is saying she "hopes" she can have them done the next day. We were getting paid every week, we came in again to be paid and she didnt tell anyone we were switching to every 2 weeks and when we asked her about it she said " there is executive decisions that need to be made and sometimes I dont need to tell you guys anything." After we are fined she starting creating fake checks too act as if she had been paying us in checks and sticking them in our file.in March we had a paycheck where she left out an entire week of pay. I still as of today have not gotten that week. The first and second check in April she shorted me over $150. I still have not recieved any of that money. The last paycheck I recieved she expected for us to keep coming to work 4 days out the week but yet she told us she would only pay us for 5 hours. Craziness. She wrote me up and said I wasnt showing up for work. A lie! I called her (oh because I forgot to mention that she is the owner but only shows up to the shop 1 day a week) to let her know i have my time sheets and was wondering what day I hadnt showed up. She was speechless and said "oh well I mean you havent came to meetings" i said the write up said I wasnt coming to work. I only didnt show up to 2 meetings because the times constantly kept being changed and I had previous engagments and couldnt make it. I called and told both managers ahead of time. They said ok. The owner apologizes and says she is so sorry and that I can disregard the write up. A week before this is when her and I had a one on one meeting, where she admits owing me money but I was to check something the next day on the computer in the shop to see if there were additional fees owed. Which it was. She came up with a bonus that we were to get if we all made so much. She has owed us that since January and we have not been paid that. Every month she gave an excuse on why we wouldnt get it every month. That brings me to the past 3 weeks. Every Thurs I was to come and do my required hours. All 3 weeks I show up and sit and wait and NOONE came to open the shop. So i left. Even after me calling and the managers deciding the arent coming in till late. I get a call this Thurs from the owner saying Im fired. I came into the shop and let the manager know if she didnt pay me (because my check was wrong again), I was suing. All of a sudden Im fired and she only wants to admit now she owes me one week. I have worked there for a year, working hard getting underpaid or not paid at all, trying to stick it out, hoping it will get better. This woman is a LIAR, she is a SCAM artist. She runs her own employees names in the ground behind their back because she is a COWARD. She is horrible at the buisness and dosent know the first thing about hair, she owes me money and a signed letter for me to recieve my managers. I came to work and get more clientile. I now because of her lies have an infraction on my license because of her. She is Horrible and needs to sell her shop. She has fired 3 of us in 4 weeks and we were all the ones being paid hourly (how convienient) she only has one person left to pay hourly. I want her to be put to an end on her buisness practices because she is unprofessional.
