A college-aged kid named Jared Macveil came to our door this past Saturday, May 23. He immediately told us that one of our neighbors, whom we vey much trust, referred him to us. He showed us a badge to show he was "legitimate." He also told us the same story I've read from many others on this site - he was raising money for college, and he had a chance to win a trip to Cancun (he'd get 500 points for 2 magazines, and 1000 points for 3 magazines). We thought we were doing a good thing by supporting him and getting some magazines. He also gave us a "Bug Off" receipt with a happy face on it. He successfully sold to 3 or 4 neighbors on our street.
Yesterday we got a call from our trustworthy neighbors (who referred him to us) and told us of this web-site. I started reading all these other experiences and was amazed at how eerily similar the stories were (the trip to Cancun, the Bug Off sticker). Some responses to these complaints note that they received their magazines, but I didn't wan't to risk it, so I canceled our check.
Our neighbor across the street didn't buy a magazine as this kid couldn't give a straight response on which High School he attended.
Hope this helps others.
