A college-age male knocked on our door describing a fund raiser that he was involved in to help college students raise money for college.
He was selling magazine subscriptions at a discounted rate for Palmetto Marketing, Inc. Out of Coral Springs, FL. He explained the whole "contest" to us and said that he only needed to sell a few more magazines to win the contest which included a trip to Cancun.
When we said that we didn't have a check on us he said that he would get double points if we paid in cash. I guess that comment should have tipped us off, but we thought we were helping this very polite and talkative young man get to college.
After receiving what looked like a valid receipt for our magazines, which also included 3 "free" magazines, we paid him $55 in cash. He even asked for another neighbor that he could see next that might help him out.
A few days later, my neighbor that referred him to us called to say that she went on the internet looking for a phone number to cancel her order and found out that it is a scam. Luckily for her she paid by check and called to cancel her check.
