I was approached by a young man who said he had won a trip to London but he was trying to earn extra points and was selling magazines to do so. He named one of my neighbors and said that he had bought a subscription to go to the Shriner's Children's Hospital. He also mentioned that his grandmother lived in the apartment complex next to our neighborhood.
I purchased a subcription to go the Shriner's Hospital. He asked that I give him $10.00 in cash and give him a check for the balance. When he left I had a bad feeling about the experience so I called the neighbor he mentioned and was told that he never even mentioned magazines.
Later on in the evening I received calls from several other neighbors with similar stories. They were told that I was a good friend of his grandmother's. One neighbor said that he was very rude when she refused to purchase a subsciption and another neighbor said he shook his fist at her.
I ended up calling the police and was told that this probably was a legitimate company and that the only law they were breaking was if they didn't have a permit to sell in the city limits.
I sent a cancellation notice to the company and also stopped payment on my check.
