My husband purchased a tanzanite ring for me for Valentines Day. It was not an expensive ring, but it was important to me. When I had the ring sized, I had asked about the hardness of the stone, and was told it was very hard, and that it would be okay to be an "everyday" ring.
Within a couple months, a prong broke on the ring, (don't know why, just noticed it was broken... Didn't bump it or anything). Luckily, I found the stone on the carpet and returned the ring to the store for repair. When I picked the ring up, I noticed right away, a huge scratch across the stone, from the prong that was fixed, all the way across the top.
The stone was also sitting very lopsided in the setting. I immediately brought it to the attention of the clerk. She became somewhat aggitated, and said the prong by the scratch wasn't even the one they had fixed. Of course, I pointed out on the reciept that it was. She then said there was "no way possible" for their jewelry repair person to have made this scratch. This went on between her and I for about 5 minutes, until I finally became so mad I thought I would scream, and I left.
I wore the ring once more, and the ring itself came apart where it had been sized. When I took the ring to another, more reputable jeweler, he told me it appeared obvious to him the scratch had been put there by some sort of jeweler's tool. He also explained to me why the ring had broken. Something in the way it was cut straight across to enlarge the ring, instead of at certain angles, sorry I don't know more about what he said. Needless to say, I won't go back, and I tell anyone who'll listen to avoid the place like the plague.
