I made two automated, collect calls in the evening from Norfolk, VA to Dale City, VA while visiting my brother in the hospital. When I received my phone bill I was charged $16.75 for a 1 minute call and $20.65 for a 4 minute call for a total of $37.40.
I called Opticom to complain and I was told that although no operator assisted me as they were collect calls the FCC allowed them to charge the operator assisted rate. Next time I should dial "O", get a live operator, and ask how much the calls will be.
Gee, I wonder what would happen if every one called the Opticom Operator, got a rate, and then didn't place the call?
