I stupidly fell for this one.
One Dec. 22 I received a call from Mario Holmes of CAMCO stating that I Owed a debt on a credit card from 1988 for $505.00, but with interest it is now $1,005.00. If I paid the debt now (by 12/31/03) it would only be $505.00. I screamed, ranted, and raved that I did believe this was paid off, 15 years ago was a long time to remember, on and on. He insisted that he would ruin my credit and on and on. I STUPIDLY went and got my check book and gave him all the routing info and used ck. #1068, postdated for 12/31/03 for $505.00.
I felt something was not right, called a friend and brother and both said to stop payment on check... I immediately did, and then called Mario and left a message that I had.
Low and behold, I went to the bank to make a transaction, and my accountshowed a negative $274.00. After investigating, I found that CAMCO had used check #1086 to process the check for $505.00 on 12/31/03.
I immediately called CAMCO and Mario said that must have been a bookkeeping error and no one in that dept. Now. I said how interesting you just conveniently changed the check #. To suit your need even though I had told him that I was stopping payment and don't harass me any more.
I went to the bank to file a fraud report and to see why they cleared the check since I had put a stop payment for #1068 for $505.00 and didn't even have enough money to cover the check #1086 anyway. They said they did it as a customer service and because I HAD given CAMCO my routing #, etc., it wasn't considered fraud. THIS IS FRAUD!!!
I am lost as to what to do next. Help!!!
