In July I lost my job and a few months later I was unable to pay all of my bills.in an effort to cut my expenses I began to do away with unnecessary items such as my cell phone.
Alltel collectors begin calling you during the dinner hour about your account when the payment is one day beyond the due date. On the first call I received from the collector I told her that I had lost my job and that I wanted the service disconnected. I also told her that I was unable to make a payment at that time. She took the information and hung up. This conversation took place on October 31. She gave me no information about any specific requirements to disconnect the service. On Nov 1 my cell phone service was disconnected by Alltel. I continued to get a bill for the basic service charge for November and December for a cell phone that had no service.
After two months of nightly calls and sometimes as many as three calls in one day, in late December one of the collectors tells me that I have to call a specific 800 number to have my service stopped. I told the collector that my service had been cut off by Alltel on Nov 1. He then siad that they had only "interrupted" my service for non-payment and that I had to call the 800 number to discontinue service and, oh, by the way, there will be a $200 disconnection fee. I asked him why had I not been told this back in October. He also told me that I could not go to the local Alltel office where I signed up for the service to stop the service. I could only call this 800 number.
What a RIPOFF! They want me to pay for two months of service when I had none plus pay them $200 to disconnect the service. Ain't never gonna happen!!
