Gaston County Animal Control
Unnecessarily euthanized my cat without my knowledge

The week after Thanksgiving this year my fiance and I were awakened by the sound of our cat fighting outside. When we got outside, we saw the cat run away and a racoon standing there staring at us. The racoon then ran off and we went to find our cat to make sure he was OK. We took him to the vet who immediately ordered us out of his office once we told him what had happened.

We returned home with our cat and had not been there long when Gaston County Animal Control showed up. As one animal control officer questioned us about what had happened, another took our cat outside with him. The cat was four months late on his rabies vaccine. We knew the racoon was very possibly rabid and that we were facing a series of rabies vaccinations as a precaution from handling the cat and the cat would have to be quarentined for a period of time to watch him for any signs of rabies. When the other animal control officer returned, we learned that he had just euthanized our cat. The animal control officers told us that they had to have him tested for rabies since he was attacked by the racoon.

Excuse me, but I don't think an animal would test positive for rabies in only a couple of hours. Our poor precious cat was euthanized, decapitated, and his head sent to a lab for testing. Of course he tested negative for rabies! I don't know who trained these jerks in the proper procedure of handling of a possible rabies case, but they obviously didn't know proper procedure because our cat should have been given a rabies booster and then quarentined.instead, they just snuffed out his life right then and there. I am sure that a rabies vaccine is probably still effective for some time after the due date. These clowns didn't even give us a choice on quarentine or euthanasia. They just did what was easiest for them.

My family is devastated to say the least. Our cat was a member of our family, and they treated him like he was some homeless stray. The following week we set a trap to try and catch the racoon that had attacked our cat.instead, we caught a feral cat. We called animal control to come and pick up this cat and do you know what they said? They couldn't do anything because it wasn't their trap!
