Phony Scholarship

I wish I had googled this company before I wrote a check! I can't believe I got scammed - I'm usually very skeptical and careful. A very friendly young man ("24") who said he had spent 6 years in the service and now was attending Syracuse college was selling magazine subscriptions door to door. He said he needed to raise money for a wonderful opportunity he had won to intern at the BBC in London. His father was making him earn the money for this trip since it cost over $8,000. He waited until the last minute and now was almost done. He supposedly lived around the corner and had already gotten checks from our neighbors (he flashed a check) who, according to him, had told him we were really nice. His manner was folksy, full of jokes and humor. He said the magazines would go to servicemen in Iraq and he would get 80% of the profit for his trip. The form looked very authentic and the check was written to a company, so I felt OK doing it. After I thought about it more, I began to feel uneasy. When I googled the company the next day, I read the same story filed by several others! I quickly called the bank and stopped payment on my check. The stop payment fee was almost as much as my check, but at least the Heritage Marketing co. And the "nice young man" who lied through his teeth to me won't!
