On April 21 a young man came to my door representing himself as an honor student at the University of Tennessee as well as someone who lived in my neighborhood and a veteran who had served in Iraq. He also claimed that his brother had been killed by an IED.
He said he was a journalism student who had the opportunity to do an internship with the BBC in England and was trying to raise money for his trip.
Also said if you didn't want the magazine they had a program where you could donate the magazine to wounded US troops so they would have some reading materials.
I had a weird feeling about it at the time but didn't listen to my gut. I was dumb (maybe it was the way he used the military knowing we want to do what we can for our troops) and gave him a check. It wasn't until 2 days later that I found a flyer in my yard with his photo on it that someone had circulated warning about this kid and his tactics that I knew for sure I had been duped.
