Donald Dunlap, AKA Dunlap Heating and AC, Tampa, Florida, came to my house and initially told me I needed new air conditioning ductwork which he replaced for $1,000. Next he told me I needed a new unit, for $4,000. He held himself out to be a licensed AC or HVAC contractor.
He charged a total of $6,000 for all the work. The unit kept malfunctioning. He came out the first two times but then he stopped answering all calls. I had to call another contractor who told me that it was dangerously installed, with no heat pump as initially promised.
The entire system had to be re-wired at a cost of several hundred dollars. I estimate my total losses due to Dunlap's ripoff to be somewhere in the area of $3,000 to $3,500.
I filed a complaint with the state licensing board and they were no help. No matter what I provided them they wanted more and finally dropped the complaint.
