So, how do you protect yourself against a so called law firm that can ruin your credit and life that you have worked to hard to acheive? My husband has worked back-breaking work for 28 years. He owns his own business and has now for 25 years in construction.
Yesterday, June 22, my husband gets a phone call from the law office of Paul Stassinos, who stated my husband wrote a bad check and he owed this office 2089.47 now or they where going to take him to court and sue him.
They wanted a credit card number right then and my husband told them he would not do that until he knew what this was about. So, the so called law office faxed a copy of the returned check, front and back, and a letter that started we owed 2089.47. The check was originally for the amount of 589.47, a payroll check.
One of our employees took his payroll check to a store near his home and cashed it. That store then deposited the check and it did not clear due to a payment for work my husband had done for a contractor did not clear. We did resolve this problem within 24 hours and the money was in my husband account. This all happened the end of April.
We were never notified by mail or certified mail of any kind. A rude phone call is what we get saying we owe this money? They wanted 1500.00 over the amount of the check!!!
I did call the store to see if we could resolve this issue and I told the owner we would pay any charges her store was charged due to this bad check. The women at the store said she would try and and get the check back from this law firm. This law firm told her that they would not do business with her store if she attempted to resolve this on her own. WHAT???
Oh, there is a language barrier with the owner of the store so I am sure this law firm took advantage of this. She does not quite understand what this law firm is doing or making off her store. When I told her they wanted 1500.00 over the cost of the check she stated "No, that is too much".
So, now I call this wonderful law firm and they said if we paid today they would lower the cost from 2089.47 to 1589.47 and wave any other fees if paid by credit card.
Yes, I paid it! My husband was so afraid of having his name ruined for writing bad checks and having his credit ruined. He did not want to go to court or deal with the phone calls any more. This has never happened to him in the 25 years of owning his own business.
My question is how can a company get away with this? I see all the things that have happened to other people by this same law firm and yet nothing is ever done. Why? This law firm has the power to ruin you and they get away with it. I am so worried that this law firm will say we never paid this amount and report it as a debt not paid.
Now, what can be done? Is there any one who has an answer? How can this firm continue to ruin people?
