I've almost got an MA & "employment agency" wants to recruit me to attend classes at a community college

I believe NES is running a bait-and-switch scam. I believe they falsely claim to have an immediate opening with an employer in whatever area in the country you are searching for work, then they recruit you for schools and other services.

I am a graduate student at a California State University. Yesterday I was online looking for summer/part-time employment when I saw an ad for a position through what appeared to be a legitimate employment agency. I filled out a basic application, and pasted my resume into the assigned place. On the application I indicated that the highest educational level I have achieved is a bachelor's degree and that I am currently enrolled in school. My resume clearly states that I am a graduate student.

There was nothing on the application to indicate that this was anything but an employment agency. There were no indications that they are a school recruitment site. Nothing on the application stated that if I applied with them I would be contacted about enrolling in a school.

Almost the instant I submitted the application page my phone rang. It was a woman. The background noise indicated a busy call center. She said that she was with the academic advising center. I asked a series of questions designed to find out which school or company she represents, but she just kept repeating that she was with the "academic advising center". She stated she was responding to my request for information on continuing my education.By her admission, her call was in response to the job application I had just submitted. Despite the fact my application clearly indicated I already have a BA and that I am pursuing an MA, she stated she was unaware of those facts. I informed her that since I am currently enrolled in an advanced degree program, I am not interested in receiving any further calls regarding "continuing my education", only calls for part-time employment.

In order to ensure that my wishes were perfectly clear, I called the company number listed on their website. Nothing on the phone menu indicated that they were anything but an employment agency. I was prompted to leave a message.in my message I reiterated that I have a BA, I am pursuing an MA, and that I am only interested in being contacted by them regarding legitimate job openings in my area.

Perhaps 15 minutes later I received a return phone call from NES. At no time during the call did he assure me that my wishes would be honored.instead he wanted to explain their full range of services, and how their company works (e.G. Essentially they are a clearing house that will forward my resume to interested recruiters), and especially how they can help me obtain a better job by "continuing my education". Again, despite the fact that my educational background was listed on my application and my resume, had been discussed in my conversation with the woman from the "academic advising center", and was the primary topic of my voice mail message, this man did not appear to know anything about it. So, I told him that I have a BA, that I am almost finished with my MA, and that I did not want to be contacted about "continuing my education." He stated that he just wanted to explain the misunderstanding. I told him that I did not need an explanation. I did not even need a return phone call. I just needed them to comply with my wishes.

It has only been 24 hrs. Since I submitted my "job application". I have received multiple emails from NES, and the HR Department apparently about my application with NES. The HR Department wants me to run a credit report on myself, for a fee.

For anyone who does not know. You do not have to pay anyone to get a copy of your own credit report.By law, all three credit reporting agencies have to give you one free report a year. Since they all have pretty much the same information on you, and since whenever one of them changes information on you they notify the other two agencies, there is no need to run all three of them at the same time. Every 4 months, contact one agency and request your annual report. That way you get three free reports every year.
