Summit Van Lines
Ripoff deceptive company, business from hell

Having spent over 20 years in the military and 12 years working for the federal government, I have moved both nationally and internationally well over 20 times in the past 35 years.

I can say without hesitation that this was the absolute worse move I have ever experienced. More damange to my property was done on this one move then all the others combined.

To begin, I was quoted a figure of approximately $550.00 not including packing, for the move from Mims, Florida, to Summerfield, Florida. Due to circumstances, I then requested that my furniture be placed in storage for approximately 3 months. The price quoted to me for controlled storage was $175.00 per month.

After my furniture was placed on the truck (a rental truck), I was informed that the estimate I received did not include "off-loading" the truck and I was charged an additional 300 dollors. I did receive the first months storage free, however, I was then informed that the charge of storage was $225.00 per month vice the $175.00 quoted to me.

Upon requesting delivery of my goods from storage, on several occastions I had to try to give directions from Orlando to Summerfield, a distance of approximatly 40 miles (I had to wonder how they found their way on interstate moves if they could not even find their way from Orlando to Summerfield, located just 15 miles south of Ocala).

Since I paid my personal check when my furniture was picked-up, and since I was not informed of the full amount due upon delivery, I assumed that I would be able to pay with another personal check. I was very rudely informed by the driver that he would accept only cash or a certified check.

Since the driver did not have a cell phone or any other communications, he used my phone to make a long distance call to the Summit Van Lines office in Ft. Lauderdale. I spoke with the "superviser" my self and was again told they would only accept cash or a certified check, and insisted that he had previously informed of that, which he did not. When asked how I could get a certified check when I was not informed as to the actual charges he simply ignored the question and again insisted on cash or certified check. Luckly we had enough cash on hand to pay the charges.

While unloading my furniture and boxes from the truck, I noted that many of the boxs were crushed and or torn.instead of bringing all boxes into the house we asked they they be placed in the garage. Boxes were stacked without any regard to size or weight. Large boxes on small boxes, heavy boxes on light boxes further crushing the boxes and damageing their contents. A wall unit suffered damage to the base where it had obviously been dragged on the ground with out any protection and now will have to be replaced. Checking my furniture being placed in the house I found rat and/or mouse droppings under and in several pieces (wordrobes, etc).

Because of the size of the wall unit, the movers had a problem trying to get it into the house. Since the piece comes apart in two pieces, I suggested they take it apart. The driver, in no uncertain terms informed that they would not take it apart and had no tools to do so. If I wanted them to take it into the house I would have to take the unit apart myself which I naturally did.

My suggestion to anyone considering using Summit Van Lines is, if you value your possessions, DO NOT USE Summit Van Lines. I certainly learned my lesson the hard way.
