On February 23rd at 8:30 am noticed an endcap featuring "artisan rolls" for just under $5.00 for a container - a clear plastic dome that cakes are usually sold in. Unfortunately, the sell-by date was for the 24th - the next day.
I did not buy, but continued shopping. Upon check-out I noticed an employee removing the rolls from the shelf, as they were not selling.
I returned that same evening to find the display full of "Fresh " rolls with a sell-by date of March 3rd... A full week. I happily bought the "new" rolls thinking that They were just baked, and would be great with that nights dinner. WRONG! Every single roll was rock-hard stale. Not fit to feed to the birds.
It dawned on me that the guy took the containers in the back and changed the sell-by stickers on the soon -to-be stale rolls. To check I tried peeling off the sticker - it comes right off.
I've been in retail over 25 years and one thing that I know is that labels are not removeable unless by design.
One thing that I've learned is not to buy rolls in hard plastic containers that don't allow for a little freshness squeeze.
It's not the five bucks, it's the lack of honesty that I resent.
