Removed money from my checking account without billing me first

I was contacted by North American Telephone Network at a time when I was frustrated by the long distance company with whom I had been doing business. They offered long distance service and local toll charges at 3.9 cents per minute, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I had to dial a series a numbers to reach their service, but, I decided, although annoying, the savings would outweigh the inconvenience. I agreed to the preliminary fee and gave them my checking account numbers so the monthly charge could be removed automatically from my account.

Everything seemed to be going well at first, so I cancelled my other long distance carrier and used North American exclusively. What a shock I had when I received my monthly checking account statement from my bank. North American had charged my account three separate times during a 30 day period. The money was actually removed from the account the day they mailed the statements. I was not even given a chance to make sure the money was in the account before they requisitioned it. Luckily, I discovered what was going on before my account was in the red, but I wonder how many people have not been so fortunate.
