I am writing on behalf of my grandparents. One day last August, they had been having trouble with their telephone; no one could call in. We found out at the end of the day that their line had been forwarded to another number and the other party had been answering the phone. Ameritech could not explain how that happened since no one was at my grandparents house knows how to forward a phone line. They switched the line back that evening.
A few weeks later, they get a $283 long distance bill. The party who was receiving our phone calls had accepted collect calls from the same number (a pay phone from a prison) the entire day. My grandparents don't even have long distance on their phone. AT&T has been calling and harassing my grandparents to pay this bill which they did not make and their customer service managers will not return any phone calls.
Their customer service keeps bouncing us from one agent to the next until we end up with an agent whose computer is down and tells us that they will have a manager give us a call, which they never do. AT&T first told us that they will remove the charge if we have both them and Ameritech on the phone so that they can confirm that we had phone trouble on the day in question. Then they told us that Ameritech had to fax a statement to them describing the phone trouble that we experienced on the day in question.
AT&T are still harrassing my grandparents for payment for this bill that they did not make and have turned the account over to a collection agency. My grandparents are standing their ground and refusing to pay this bill. AT&T is being evasive in dealing with this situation. We want this bill cancelled and any negative reporting done by AT&T to my grandfather's credit report to be removed.
