I recently had a need to make telephone calls to a friend in Ontario Canada. I was on an MCI discounted rate plan and assumed the rates to Canada would be higher than my domestic rates, but still reasonable.
I just received a bill covering 77 minutes of calls to Canada, which MCI is charging me $98.56.
This insane rate is probably worse than I could do with a pay telephone. I called MCI to inquire and was told that I could get a rate of 7 cents a minute (5 cents a minute on weekends) for a charge of a few dollars per month!) So, with the plan, I can pay 7 cents a minute rather during the peak, rather than a rate which is 3,014% more!!!
This gulf absolutely defies economic logic. Clearly, if the company feels it can make a profit at 7 cents a minute (which in the case of MCI-Worldcom may be questionable), the difference between 7 cents and $2.18 goes beyond profit and approaches thievery.
I encourage everyone using MCI carefully scrutinize their bills and their calling plans. This company is in the throes of reorganization and customers to pay close regard to its function
