My daughter was moving into her new home. She got an estimate of $285.00 from Continental Express to move some of their furniture. Most of their belongings were moved into the house the day before, and we only needed them to move a few pieces of large furniture. The move was approx. 5 blocks from the old house to the new house - not more than a mile.
The estimate was for 3 movers for 3 hours. My daughter was told that the price including wrapping, and that the movers would bring the wrap, and there would be no cost for the wrapping material. The person who gave my daughter an estimate said that if it went over the 3 hours, the charge was $95 per hour.
The movers showed up, but only 2 of them worked. The person that was the foreman did not move, only gave directions to the 2 workers. The movers were clearly taking their time, and it became obvious that the moving would not get done within the 3 hours. A charge for some overtime was anticipated.
The movers left the old house the same time we departed. We arrived at the new house in less than 5 minutes, and it took the movers approx. 10 minutes. The movers came to the door of the new house and presented my daughter with a bill for $785!! She was stunned and asked them how they came up with this amount. She found out that they charged her for 30 minutes of driving time to get from her old house to her new house, when we know their drive was only 10 minutes. They put a floor lamp in a box, and charged $71 for the box. They wrapped an inexpensive mirror, and charged over $100 to wrap the mirror.
My daughter told them that they charged $100 to wrap a small mirror that only cost $9! They also charged other wrapping fees, contrary to the agreement. We argued and debated with the movers, but the bottom line, if my daughter did not pay the $785, they were going to drive off with her furniture. My daughter was distraught, and the movers were rude, and continued to make rude comments to my daughter while unloading her furniture. The whole exchange was fraudulent. I cannot think of a time when I was angrier. My daughter has called the company without success.
