My mother started getting phone calls explaining that she could reduce her monthly payment from $49.95/month to $39.95/month on the five magazines she had subscribed to in 2005. She's not getting any magazines. I took over the conversation. They said they hadn't received a payment since Feb. Of 2006. When asked why they waited so long to get in touch over a delinquent account, I was told they had a lot of customers to work with. TWO YEARS???
There was no written subscription. Just a "verbal agreement" that they prepaid but yet they could not provide a copy of the recording upon request. They couldn't give me a number to customer support, or the collection agency.
The number showed up the same all three times. The calls came in as 514-671-0338 on call ID. When I asked them what state they were calling from, I was told New York. I ran the number through the 411 oprator and the internet and it comes from Pointe Claire, Quebec, Canada as a cell number or a cafe.
Names of some of the people I got were Tanya, Peter, and a supervisor of Ben.
When I asked what city, he had to cover the phone for about four seconds and came back with Norfolk. I had the Attorney Generals number handy when they called and told them to wite a number down when I gave it to them to help rectify the problem. After he wrote it down and found out who it was, he became aggravated and confused as to why I wasn't willing to lower payments now before it went to collections, where I would owe the whole amount of $1500.00 to close the balance and account.
I asked him for an address so if a payment was to be sent out, we could have it for later. He said the first payment has to be from an account, then we would be able to set it up for monthly payments to send in, and he never gave me an address.
One person stated the account was started with a credit card. The next guy in the same conversation stated it was a checking account.
I then hit them with what I knew just by a little digging on the internet. I told them I was going to be out of town for a few days and wouldn't be able to help alleviate the situation as I was going to Canada to do some fishing. I asked them if they new if the fishing was good in Pointe Claire, Quebec. There was about five seconds of silence.
He wanted to know when they could resolve the account problem and complained that I was talking about fishing in Canada. I explained the number had been looked up and found to be a land based line in Pointe Claire, Quebec, Canada. He stated the phone lines were rerouted. I asked if I were to call the number that showed up on my caller ID back, would I get ahold of Family Reader Club in New York. He said, "You can call to high heaven if you like, and your talking about fishing in Canada, HA HA".
To make it all short, They call for the purpose of lowering payments for magazines she doen't get anyway. Haven't received payment for over two years. Need an account number to start the payments again or it will be turned over to collections. Can't provide a single number for any other department OR a copy of the tape recorded agreement. To top it all off, they lie about where they are calling from or really are re routing the number.
