Return ripoff

I received a massaging chair cushion for christmas. I planned on putting it on my chair at work but the thing sounded like a jet plane landing. It was just too loud to use at the office. I got the receipt from the person who bought it for me and took it back to the store the 1st week of January. I planned on getting a quieter model from brookstone instead.

The item cost 63.00 when originally purchased just 2 weeks prior. The receipt reflected this. I was told by the sales associate that since I did not have the debit card the item was purchased with I could not get cash back. They would have to give me a store credit. I was appalled. I did everything right. I embarassed the person who purchased it for me by telling them it was too loud. The girl actually told me to have that person give me the cash then bring the item back themselves. Who does that? Someone gives you a gift and you hand it back to them and say can you please just give me the cash you paid for this and deal with the return yourself. That's just not how I treat people.

Anyway, I told the associate a gift card was fine. I'm sure I could purchase something else there. She then handed me a gift card and said "alright you have a balance of 47 dollars (& some change)". I asked her why I didn't get the price originally paid for the item she replied that since I did not have the debit card to put the refund back on she had to act as if I did not have the receipt and the computer will give me the current sale price of the item.

I made her call and talk to a manager and he told her to have me call a customer service number. They did end up giving me a gift card for the entire purchase price a few weeks later but all of the hassle just to return something the week after Christmas is ridiculous.

Everyone knows that people return things that other people bought for them after the holidays. Why do they require you to have the debit card that the item is purchased on is ridiculous especially for something that costs a mere 60 bucks. It's not like I was asking them to hand me hundreds of dollars. Debit card transactions are supposed to be treated as cash and this company is violating this rule. I did file a complaint with my financial institution. I have not purchased anything there since so I'm not sure if they have changed this ridiculous policy
