Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC attempts to collect debts that have been written off by the original creditor. PRA has no legal ability to collect these debts, but if you are summoned to court by an official document, you must attend the hearing. If you do not show up, they will get a default judgment against you, even though you do not legally owe the debt they are attempting to collect.
If PRA harrasses you, send them a "Cease and Desist" letter (certified mail). If they continue harassing you, contact a "contingency" attorney who can collect damages from them.
Their biggest weakness is violations of the FTC fair credit reporting act.
Do not give any information to the telemarketers who contact you on behalf of Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC, simply hang up on them.
