Ripoff Sears sells less horsepower than advertized on air compressors

I purchased an air compressor in Dec. 2001 from my local sears store. I iniated a service call in Nov. 2002. When the repairman removed the motor/pump cover I looked at the motor. It was small. The advertizement on the cover of the housing stipulated that the motor was a 5.5 horsepower motor.

The operators manual's specification sheet specified a 5.5 horsepower motor. That can't be! The motor data plate 1ndicated 120 volts and 15 ampers power draw. That is only 2.2 horsepower. 120*15/746=2.2hp

I called sears on to craftsman on to the devillebliss company. They make the motor/pump/tank assembley. Mr. Tom Arreguin (1-800-888-2468) told me that I was correct. He said it was an industry standard to rate a motor at the maximum ampere draw at motor start up. This could be 3 or 4 times the normal running ampers when it is doing its work.

This gives an incorrect horsepower rating which is missleading to the public. If a person buys a 5.5 horsepower motor it should be that much. He said that it was a marketing ploy to make the product appear bigger or better than it really was.

At the same time I also purchased a grass edger from sears. It was rated at 3 peek horsepower. It too was rated at 120 volts and 15 amperes. People are not aware of missleading claimes and Sears should be made to stop missleading the public.
