Complaint / Review
Northland Moving Co
Negligent, Avoids Questions, Irresponsible, Damages, Financial Hardship, Lengthy Delivery

My name is Rebekah Heiner. I am a full time student, as well as work a full time job. I am writing in regards to a recent experience I have been through with a local moving company. My objective in writing this complaint is to bring the company's irresponsibility and negligence to the Better Business Bureau and consumers across Chicago's attention. I am especially concerned in that I originally employed this company as I had researched their good standing with the Better Business Bureau and trusted the accreditation program. That has proven to be a mistake.

I scheduled a cross-country move to be picked up from Chicago on February 29 to be taken to Washington by Northland Moving Company, job number 288238. Upon arrival of my destination in Washington, unforeseen circumstances resulted in me personally relocating back to Chicago. I contacted Northland Moving Company on March 4 to inform them that my shipment needed to go back to Chicago. Due to the shipment being in transit, I was informed that my belongings would take until March 27 at the very latest to arrival back in Chicago. Understanding the unusual circumstances, I agreed and paid Northland Moving Company a total of $3389.17.

March 27th passed, and I didn't receive so much as a phone call from Northland Moving Company. Upon contacting Northland Moving Company, I was informed that the representative "could not find my shipment." That specific week was finals with my school so having too much on my plate already I accepted that they would find my belongings and waited for a return call. The call came over a week later, when the representative informed me that they had found my belongings. The driver had left my shipment in a storage unit in Seattle. The next truck to come from the West Coast was supposedly picking up my belongings.By this time it was well into April.

As the second week in April approached, I became very concerned that literally everything I owned was lost, stolen, or that I would simply never see it again. I took a more aggressive approach to tracking my belongings. Upon doing such, I was promised that my things would be delivered to my house that weekend - April 5. Relieved, I reserved the freight elevator in my building and was very excited. April 5th passed without as much as a phone call from Northland Moving Company. The next time I spoke to the Northland Moving Company representative it was one excuse after another. Promise after promise was broken by Northland Moving Company and I went into depression anticipating the loss of everything I owned. Finally, my belongings arrived April 20 after 48 days from the moment I called Northland Moving Company and asked that my belongings be taken back to Chicago.

Imagine my relief when after an emotional battle with Northland Moving Company, everything I held dear was once again in my possession. My joy was very short-lived as there was extensive damage to my brand new furniture which I had purchased from Macys just months prior to my experience with Northland Moving Company. Not only were items damaged, dented, scratched, but some items were missing all together. I was physically, mentally, and emotionally ill throughout the day as a result of Northland Moving Company's negligence.

The list of items that were damaged are below, as well as pictures attached of every item.

1-End Table 1 legs scratched and dented.
2-End Table 2 top and legs scratched and dented.
3-Coffee Table legs dented and scratched.
4-Two Plates - broken
5-Box Spring - black hand prints
6-Matress - tear and black marks
7-Bed Frame - baseboards to my bed frame (very expensive) broken, disconnected, and scratched.
8-Nightstand - has very large and deep scratch.
9- Screws MISSING to hold boards underneath box spring.
10- MISSING tall stand-up living room lamp.

Not only were my belongings scratched, dented, or missing all together I was almost physically injured due to Northland Moving Company's negligence. The broken piece of my bed frame had merely been set in the adjoining board to look like it fit. When pressure was applied, the piece snapped causing the bed to collapse. My building maintenance man examined the board, and verified that the bed had been misleadingly constructed to appear whole.

In addition to the above mentioned circumstances, while waiting week after week I incurred countless unnecessary expenses due to my belongings lengthy delay. The worry, the stress, and the fighting with Northland Moving Company to just get answers have had a detrimental affect on my health.

Northland Moving Company is now requesting that I go through the claims department to get any type of reimbursement or compensation for my delay and great loss. It is time for me to stop being a victim of Northland Moving Company's false promises and empty reassurances. I am appalled that such an irresponsible company could be accredited by the Better Business Bureau, and want this instance brought to attention. Most importantly, however, I want consumers out there looking into a moving company to be informed.
