This company has young, college age people selling magazine subscriptions door to door. The young man who called on me told me he was from a local university. He said he was in a contest.
He gave me a list of magazines that were for sale, and the one I chose, a guitar magazine for my daughter, he told me was exclusive to FRS Inc, and I could not get it anywhere else. He also told me that I would have the three working days to cancel, and that the company does not run the checks through for two full weeks, to allow all cancellations to be noted.
I bought it, paid via check. This was on Oct. 30. That evening, I told my daughter about it, and we wanted to see if it might have a website. That was when I learned that it was NOT exclusive to FRS, NOR was is the price that I was charged, three times the normal subscription rate!
I immediatly went the next morning, 12/1, I mailed off my cancellation notice, as well as called my bank to put a stop payment on the check. This being a Saturday, I was able to cancel the check online, and it went into effect 12/3/08.
On 12/10/08, my bank notified me that the check had been presented for collection. A ten day period from the date of purchase. So after that I assumed that they would understand that I was not buying from them.
On Jan. 28, I get a letter from CPR Financial Services, demanding full payment for the magazine, plus 30.00 check fee. I called them, they told me to call FRS, I called them, and what a surprise, they never got my cancellation. I told them it was my word against theirs, and that while I could not proove that I sent in the cancellation, I COULD proove that I stopped payment on the check the same day.
So from what I have read here, as well as other places, they seem to have a history of doing this. I notified them and their collection agent that I would not pay, and that if I ever heard from them again, I would consider it slander, (since they are asserting that my check bounced, NOT that is was stopped), and harrasment.
I hope this will help one other person, if you do get mixed up with this bunch, send that cancellation with return receipt!
