Cox Commucations workers blatantly lied to us, and now we have a $800 bill

We had an account with Cox Communications of Florida. I asked them specifically, Does our account include FREE UNLIMITED LONG DISTANCES TO CANADA. And the answer was YES from the representative looking me straight in the face in their office. I told her, I am going to be going to Canada, and my sister will be calling me, are you SURE this is FREE? And I got YES, with my plan it was FREE.

So I go to Canada for a month, and talk almost every other night with my sister. Sometimes every three nights or so. For anywhere between ten minutes to two hours. When I get home, I get a bill and it says I suddenly owe $800~! I try to contact the office, and get the run around about it. When I finally give up and cancel the account with the unpaid balance and get new service elsewhere, worrying about what to do with that bill, a guy shows up to get the equipment from our service. I look at him and say Your company lied to me. How can I fix this? What am I supposed to do? I can't pay this bill.

He told me to contact them and try to settle it. I tried to contact them, but the person was insisting that they did nothing wrong, and that my plan clearly does not cover that. That I have a copy of my plan and should know what is on there. I said that it said it was free long distance, it didn't say to WHERE, so I had asked. They said that clearly it was my fault, I must have misheard the clerk.

Then two weeks later I get another bill from them, with a note saying they will 'settle for $550 instead of $800'. To hell with that! I should only owe them for regular service for that month, which would have been $170. But they still insist it was my fault, and that their technician did not lie to me about my service in order to lead me into a false sense of security about my long distance plan and its coverage. I can't prove they did this on purpose, but I keep hearing other people telling me nothing but bad things about their clerks. About being lied to... So. It seems that there is nothing I can do, because I don't have $550 to even pay on a settled agreement with them. Whatever, I was lied to.
