John Wiley is a lawyer in Birmingham, Alabama, who was assigned to appeal the case of a death row inmate. The inmate repeatedly requested for John Wiley to send him his trial transcripts. John Wiley wrote a letter to the inmate, Timothy Jason Jones, in late stating that he would send the transcript and would visit Timothy in prison "soon".
John Wiley never did provide Timothy's transcript nor did he visit him in prison. Phone calls to the attorney's office were not returned.
John Wiley never notified his client of his appeal to the Alabama Criminal Court of Appeals on February 3. Timothy learned about it through the grapevine.
Neither did John Wiley notify Timothy that The Alabama Supreme Court refused to hear his case in late June.
On September 2, Timothy Jason Jones was found dead in his cell on death row in Holman Correctional Facility. Prison officials stated he had committed suicide by cutting his wrist and neck. However, the weapon used in the alleged suicide was never found.
The Alabama Department of Corrections has not released the report of Timothy's death.
Throughout the appeals process, John Wiley was unavailable for comment. He has not requested the prison's report of Timothy's death. As usual, he is not returning phone calls.
