I signed up to check my credit report for free at freecreditreport.com, understanding that I had to cancel within thirty days or I would be charged. Immediately after checking my credit report I cancelled my subscription.
For four months now I had been being charged $12 a month by CIC*Triple Advantage. I didn't pick up on it until this month. I wasn't sure who that company was so I typed it into google and saw that it was the biller for freecreditreport.com.
I called their number and told them they had charged me incorrectly and the person on the phone told me to go the the site and read the terms and conditions. I told him I had followed the instructions on how to cancel my subscription when I cancelled it months ago, and he told me I still hadn't cancelled it.
I still can't find out where it says I would be charged $12 a month after going through the cancellation process as instructed on the site. If it is hidden away somewhere well that is truly deceptive business practice. They advertise a free credit report, and make it clear that you will be charged if you don't cancel. But it does not tell you that if you cancel according to the instructions on the site you will still be charged.
So due to their deceptive business practice they were able to con me out of fifty bucks. It's not too terrible of a beating, but it's the principle of the thing.
