Ripoff allowed a fraudelent account to be opened Nationwide Nationwide

In 2001 my husband and I were identity theft victims. Sprint allowed an account to be opened with my husband's SSN, but they used my name. Also, it is clear that they did not check any information, the address used NEVER belonged to us. I was just contacted by a collection agency who would like almost $800.00. I contacted Sprint, spent 33 minutes (25 of which was on hold) on the phone and was finally transferred to the Fraud department.

The Fraud department has informed me that it is my responsibility to fill out a fraud package, return it, call them back to verify their receipt of my package, and IF they determine it to be fraud they will contact me. My problem is this, why do "we" the consumers have to do all this? If Sprint would simply do THEIR job, verify information, I wouldn't be dealing with this.

I asked Ashley (the fraud rep) why Sprint opened the account in the first place. Her response is that they can't control the information used by people. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? So, I guess I can use John Smith's name and Susie Que's SSN and get a Sprint account. One can only assume that if it happened to me, it will and has happened numerous times with this company. Beware!!
